What to Serve My Dogs — Veg or Non-Veg?

The Ongoing Debate for Pet Parents The veg vs non-veg question is one of the longest-running debates among dog parents. Some are certain their dogs can thrive on a vegetarian diet. Others can’t imagine raising a dog without meat.

So… who’s right?

The truth: it’s not about winning the debate — it’s about understanding your dog’s individual needs, age, and health. Here’s my journey into this question, and what I’ve learned after nearly two decades as a pet parent.

Angus — Our First Dog (2004)

When we brought home Angus, our Labrador, my mom had one unshakable rule:

“No non-veg in the house. Not even kibble.”

So, we followed our vet’s advice — curd rice every day, with an occasional veggie-and-rice meal and maybe an egg once a week.

For six years, it seemed fine… until one winter, Angus developed pneumonia. His CBC report came back with alarming red marks. We lost him soon after. 💔 He will always be our kiddo, but the experience left us questioning if his diet had been enough.

Ozzie — Our Second Chance (2014)

It took us five years to bring another dog into our lives. In 2014, Ozzie the Shih Tzu joined our family.

We started with kibble — it lasted a month before he refused it. That’s when we began cooking fresh for him, and my pet nutrition journey truly began.

So, Can Dogs Live on a Veg Diet?

Dogs are carnivorous by anatomy, but that doesn’t mean they can’t adapt to a vegetarian diet. Whether it works depends on:

Genetics

  • Age

  • Existing health conditions

  • Nutrient balance

For younger dogs with good health, a well-planned veg diet can work — for a while.

What a Vegetarian Diet Can Include

A balanced vegetarian meal for dogs can be built from:

  • Proteins: Paneer, tofu, dal

  • Carbs: White or brown rice

  • Veggies: Pumpkin, carrot, beans, lauki

  • Supplements: Moringa powder

  • Pre/Probiotics: Curd

The Limitations of Veg Diets for Dogs

As dogs get older (around 5–6 years), their needs change:

  • Joint and bone health

  • Heart support

  • Liver and kidney function

It’s hard to meet these needs with vegetarian sources alone. This is when non-veg or non-veg supplements become essential — even in small amounts.

Adding Non-Veg Without Breaking Traditions

If you’re uncomfortable cooking meat, you can still provide essential nutrients through:

Ready-made, preservative-free meals (like Sara’s from Heads Up For Tails)

Non-veg nutritional toppers (like our Barky Sprinklers)

✅ The Balanced Approach

Younger dogs (1–5 years): Veg meals can be fine if balanced and supplemented

Older dogs (5+ years): Include non-veg or non-veg supplements for complete nutrition

Your goal: Focus on health, not ideology
