What 30 Years of Raising Dogs Taught Us About Dog Gut Health and Natural Dog Nutrition
I am a pet parent to six lovely furkids, whom I lovingly refer to as my kiddos. Everything I share here comes from over 30 years of raising, learning, experimenting, and sometimes failing with my own dogs.

I'm no saint. I've made mistakes, trusted the wrong advice, and learned things the hard way. But over time, we cracked what works when it comes to dog wellness and natural dog nutrition. This blog is not theory. It's real, lived experience from my pack to yours.

Adding pumpkin to your dog's diet is one of the best choices you can make. Now let me tell you why it took us years and one big mistake to learn this.

Our Journey with Natural Dog Nutrition

When we got home our first dog back in 2005, we were naive and honestly quite clueless. We purely went by what the vet said. And having said that, we were vegetarians. My mom was very clear that not even kibble was allowed in the house.

The vet told us, "That's fine, dogs can survive on curd rice too."

So Angus, our black Labrador, was given curd rice on weekdays and "special meals" on weekends. These consisted of one egg, rice, and veggies on Saturdays and Sundays. It was a big deal. Weekend cooking for him felt special. My mom and Pavithra would cook, and I could literally see Angus's eyes light up. He just knew weekend meant something better was coming.

We loved Angus. And he loved us. But unfortunately, not for too long. He passed away at the age of 6. Even though the vets said it had nothing to do with his diet and more to do with genetics, Pavithra and I still feel we could have done better.

Ozzie’s Lesson on Balanced Dog Nutrition

It took us 6 years before we decided to bring another kiddo home. And then came Ozzie, my soul child (Shih Tzu). This time, Pavithra and I promised we would do right by him. We followed the vet's recommendation and started with kibble.

But Ozzie, being Ozzie, decided he had enough of this s&^$t and just stopped eating. We tried frozen meal boxes back in 2015 when this wasn't even common. After a couple of weeks, he rejected that too. At that point, it hit us. I had to figure this out. I had promised him I would love and care for him to the moon and back. He would wag his tail and look at me as if to say, "Prove it, dada."

So we went deep. We researched, experimented, failed again, and learned again.

The Fundamentals of a Balanced Dog Diet

Every dog needs a nutritionally balanced meal for healthy digestion and overall dog health:

  • 60–70% Protein: This depends on your dog's size and activity.

  • 20% Vegetables: Steamed pumpkin is our first choice.

  • ~3% Organs: Essential for vitamins.

  • Eggs: Half for small dogs or one full for medium to large dogs.

  • Broth: Use chicken or vegetable broth for better dog hydration.

If you had just one vegetable to choose, and that choice was pumpkin, you are doing absolutely fine.

Why Pumpkin is the #1 Vegetable for Dog Gut Health

This nutritional powerhouse is the best addition when it comes to your dog's diet. Here is why:

  1. Fiber Content: It has the right fiber for healthy dog digestion.

  2. Gentle on Stomachs: It is extremely easy to process, making it ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

  3. Weight Management: It helps in keeping your dog at a healthy weight.

  4. Digestive Support: Most importantly, it supports dog gut health and overall digestion.

If your dog has stomach issues or digestive problems, this vegetable is usually your first line of defense.

Preparation Tips: How to Feed Pumpkin to Your Dog

To maximize the nutritional benefits, follow these steps:

  • a) Always peel the outer green skin.

  • b) Remove the seeds.

  • c) Cut into small cubes to make it easier to digest.

  • d) Prefer steaming over cooking to help retain essential nutrients.

  • e) Steam for around 15–18 minutes before serving.

Ozzie loves it. Yes, he has his fussy days, but predominantly this works. Anytime his stomach is off or he's having digestive issues, it is our go-to vegetable. Honestly, that's one of the biggest reasons why Pumpkin Brew has become a hot favorite among our dog parents. It works in real homes with real dogs.

Dog Feeding Guide: Serving Sizes by Weight

While it is powerful, balance is key. Here is a simple guide that has worked for us:

  • Small Dogs (up to 10 kg): 1 to 2 tablespoons per meal.

  • Medium Dogs (10–25 kg): 2 to 4 tablespoons per meal.

  • Large Dogs (25 kg and above): 4 to 6 tablespoons per meal.

Important Reminders for Dog Owners

  • Vegetables should be part of the meal, not the entire meal.

  • Always introduce new foods slowly, especially for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

  • Too much can lead to loose stools, so control the portions.

  • Works best when mixed with protein like chicken, paneer, or eggs for a fully balanced dog diet.

At the end of the day, every decision I make passes one test. Would I feed this to my kiddos without a second thought? If the answer is yes, it goes into their bowl.
